Do I need Counselling or Psychotherapy?
One way of looking at the difference is that Counselling tends to be more appropriate for managing a specific crisis in your life. Psychotherapy is more suitable when you have identified certain patterns in your life that you want to change. In psychotherapy we look for the cause of current problems in the past. Generally, counselling tends to be more short-term than psychotherapy. From our initial meeting we can establish which approach is best for you.
How do I choose between EMDR, NLP and Hypnotherapy?
This will depend on the changes you want to make. Sometimes the choice of therapy is very straightforward and clear. For example, for a phobia (such as fear of flying or doing presentations) hypnosis is very effective and usually needs a single session.
From our initial discussion I will make a recommendation and often two or three approaches can be combined to achieve the desired outcomes.
The Therapies page gives you further information. On the Case Studies page you will find short examples of how clients were helped to overcome their problems.
I offer all potential clients a short (30 minute) initial meeting. This is held at my practice in Stretford, Manchester. The aim is for us to find out whether we ‘click’ so that we feel confident we can work together to achieve the changes you want to make. You can ask questions about the process, the different approaches. I will find out more about your issues or problem, and take your contact details. We will also go through the ‘ground rules’ of how we work together; you get a copy of this contract.
Yes, everything we discuss is confidential and my notes are kept under lock and key and in accordance with Data Protection Act. I may discuss your situation with my supervisor, without mentioning your name. I would only break confidentiality if a client told me they intended to commit a crime, harm themselves or someone else. Then I would have to inform a third party, such as their GP, the police, or social services.
I see private clients during the day and early evening on most weekdays. A couple of times a month I also have appointments on a Saturday morning, reserved for clients who are unable to come during the week.
Sessions are about one hour. EMDR sessions can be up to 90 minutes, as are some deep trance hypnosis sessions.
I generally see clients weekly or once a fortnight. Coaching clients tend to see me once every three or four weeks.
That depends on the problem. I will be able to give you a better indication at the end of the initial meeting. Often clients find that six to eight sessions can be enough to make a difference. For clients with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) I usually recommend eight to 12 sessions, though some clients have made significant progress much more quickly.
I focus on the outcome you want to achieve, and regular reviews are part of that.
What can I do between sessions?
A lot and it will vary from client to client, for example listen to a guided visualisation, keep a daily log or diary, read an article, or experiment with a new behaviour.
Some of my clients live a long way from Manchester, so we agree to combine face-to-face meetings with email and / or telephone support. I charge for this support on a pro-rata basis of the session fee.
My fees for private individuals are from £60 per session. For corporate clients different fee rates apply. For details of fees for special programmes, such as Past Life Regression (PLR), please contact us. Fees are payable, either by cheque or cash, at the end of each session.
I see clients in Stretford, Manchester, UK. This is a quiet, residential area and there is ample parking. The practice is just over a mile from the M60 ring road and a few minutes walk from Stretford Metrolink. See Directions for further information.
