"We started with some resource building, which helped him be more grounded"
Case Study 5: Abuse and Addiction – 10 sessions
This professional had good insight into his patterns of self-sabotage. Quite successful in business, he wasn’t fulfilling his potential, he procrastinated and his drinking put his health at risk.
Both his parents had died when he was young and he was left with a bullying step-mother who was emotionally and physically abusive. He was the “run-around boy” who slept on the floor.
We started with some resource building, which helped him be more grounded when processing the painful childhood memories. He started to feel better, was able to set boundaries and he made lifestyle changes – eating better, doing things to enjoy. The last few sessions we used a special EMDR protocol to target the addictive behaviour. This helped him to cut back his drinking substantially and he felt “happier than I’ve ever been”.
